What Are The Benefits of Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Here we explain the problems wisdom teeth can cause, the benefits of their removal, what the procedure involves and how it can help you feel better.

What are wisdom teeth?

Between the ages of 17 and 25, most people develop a set of third molars that, if they grow in straight, can be an asset. However, these teeth are often misaligned or impacted and need removal.

A dentist can help prevent issues with your oral health by removing your wisdom teeth.

What problems can they cause?

If wisdom teeth emerge in an incorrect position or there isn't enough room for them in your mouth, they may become crowded, impacted, or not fully erupt.

They can cause:

  • Bad Breath
  • Painful Infection
  • Difficulty Chewing
  • Swollen Jaw or Face
  • Chest pain, lightheadedness, shortness of breath

We advise taking a preventive approach to wisdom teeth removal since molars are particularly vulnerable to dental problems.

What are the benefits?

Removing your wisdom teeth can offer benefits, including:

  • Preventing Infection
  • Preventing Damage to Teeth
  • Alleviating Pain
  • Solving Bad Breath
  • Avoiding Future Dental Work
  • Improving Oral Health

How will I feel better?

There are many benefits to having wisdom teeth removed. The procedure is quite common and recovery is quick.

Having the procedure now can prevent you from experiencing pain from impacted teeth as well as save you time and money from further dental procedures and treatments.

What does the procedure involve?

Step 1: Anesthetic

Local anesthetic is used to numb the tooth and the surrounding area. If you are anxious about the procedure, you may receive a sedative to help you relax. A general anesthetic is rarely used.

Step 2: Removing the Tooth

If the teeth are under your gum, a cut will be made and some bone may be removed. The tooth may have to be cut into pieces for removal through the opening.

If the tooth has emerged, there will be no cut. You'll feel some pressure as it is rocked back and forth, widening the socket before the tooth is removed.

You shouldn't feel any pain. If the procedure is painful for you, let your surgeon know so they can give you more anesthetic.

What about recovery from the procedure?

You should be able to return home the same day as your procedure. Dissolving stitches often take between 7 and 10 days to disappear. Gauze may also be applied to the extraction site.

You will be asked to apply pressure by biting down for about an hour. This allows a clot to form in the socket and encourages the healing process.

For 24 hours after your procedure, you should avoid:

  • Drinking Hot Liquids
  • Rinsing Your Mouth
  • Smoking or Drinking Alcohol
  • Strenuous Physical Activity

If you notice issues or extreme soreness after recovery, check in with your dentist so they can examine the extraction site.
