Metal or clear braces?

Deciding between metal and clear braces? Your best option will depend on multiple factors. Find out here why these options (as well as clear aligners) are all valid treatment options.

How do Braces Help?

Braces straighten teeth, realigning them to healthier positions. They are suitable for simple and complex orthodontic issues, including crossbite, misalignments and overbites.

Since misaligned teeth are more difficult to clean than straight teeth, misaligned teeth may lead to other oral health issues like gum disease and tooth decay. Misaligned teeth may be more easily worn down too.  In addition to health concerns, some people with misaligned teeth may feel insecure about the appearance of their smile. Misalign teeth may also make eating and speaking more difficult.

Braces can help fix misaligned teeth. During treatment, a bracket is affixed to each tooth and connected with a wire. Braces include a wire mechanism to let your orthodontist tighten them over time.

When you visit your orthodontist, your braces are adjusted slightly. Pressure is gradually applied to your teeth, bringing your smile into alignment. You have the option of choosing coloured elastics to express yourself.

Metal Braces & Clear Braces

Metal Braces

You may be familiar with traditional metal braces, since they are very common. As the name might imply, these braces are made from metal. Thanks to advancements in orthodontic technology these braces are much more streamlined now than they were in the past.

Now you have less risk of a bracket irritating your lips and cheeks, since they have become more comfortable. Since some people are still relatively reluctant to go with this option because of the more obvious appearance, they may consider 'clear' alternatives.

Clear Braces

Clear braces actually aren't transparent. Since the brackets are made from tooth-coloured ceramic, allowing them to blend with your smile.

While clear braces are an aesthetic compromise between metal braces and clear aligners. They are actually larger and more brittle than metal braces though. They are often a bit more expensive than metal braces and, therefore, should generally only be used on upper front teeth.

Option 3: Clear Aligners

Clear aligners like Invisalign are transparent and removable orthodontic appliances that are customized to your smile.

Clear aligners are made from clear plastic and are lower profile than any braces. The casual viewer will often not even notice them on your teeth.

What about cost?

People who aren't candidates for clear aligners may find clear braces to be a good compromise. Clear braces will often fall to the middle of braces and aligners in cost depending on your needs.

The cost of treatment will always depend on the nature of your orthodontic problem, the duration of your treatment, and other factors.
