The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) does not provide coverage if a procedure is completed in an out-patient facility, such as wisdom tooth removal, dental implants or other procedures that may be performed at your dentist's office or by an oral & maxillofacial surgeon, if required.
OHIP does not cover costs for regular dental care such as cleanings and checkups, fillings, X-rays, root canals and more.
Typically, OHIP would only cover costs for surgical procedures to treat illnesses or disorders that require an overnight stay in hospital (for example, facial reconstruction, infections and large tumors of the face).
Some procedures are covered by OHIP, while others are not. For example, while the surgery may be covered, costs for ancillary services required to complete the surgery such as preparations, special X-rays and others would be paid by the patient or their insurance.
